International Workshop: Wir über uns Veranstaltungen Nature Conservation and EU Financing – Challenges, Best Practices and Options

NABU (BirdLife in Germany), SOS/BirdLife Slovakia and BirdLife Europe invite you to a workshop on “Nature Conservation and EU Financing: Challenges, Best Practices and Options”. The event is held under the auspices of the Slovak EU Council Presidency. It is also part of the new NATURA 2000 Biogeographical Process of the European Commission.

Despite a number of EU and Member State successes in nature conservation, biodiversity and ecosystems are in decline across Europe. In 2014 the European Commission started to carry out a “Fitness Check” of the EU’s Birds and Habitats Directives. Yet, this exercise revealed that where properly implemented the Nature Directives are effective and fit for purpose. However, the preliminary findings of the Fitness Check also highlight that availability and ease of access to appropriate funding is one of the greatest barriers to effective implementation.

This workshop will bring together nature conservation experts, decision-makers and stakeholders from across the EU (with a focus on the CEE region) to discuss how best to address the deficiencies in existing finance and how that may be addressed in the upcoming reforms of the EU Multiannual Financial Framework. The views of key Member State governments will be combined with the experience of practitioners.

The working language of the workshop will be English. Simultaneous translation (English/Slovak) will be provided. The workshop is free of charge.
